Cleveland General Manager Frank “Trader” Lane struck again, working with Detroit’s President and GM Bill DeWitt to swap skippers: Joe Gordon went to Detroit, while Jimmy Dykes took over in Cleveland. In Cleveland, many viewed it as a way to cool a feud between Gordon and star outfielder Jimmy Piersall while others expressed a desire for the “whirling dervish” to take a break from trades. In Detroit, many fans believed Dykes did his best with the team he had and doubted Gordon could change much. But if the goal was to shake things up and energize both clubs, it certainly worked.
